Did you know that Baccarat is James Bond’s favorite casino game? Neither did I, but apparently it’s true! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to discover if it is traditional baccarat that 007 likes or if it is one of the many variations. Anyway; just so that every-one is aware of the types of baccarat in existence and on offer, here’s a brief overview of some of the variations:

Mini Baccarat

This is the most commonly found form of Baccarat in American Casinos and online casinos; it is very similar to traditional baccarat but with lower limits to enable wider accessibility. Other variations include: a smaller table, only the dealer handles the shoe, and the table is worked by one dealer only.

Chemin-de-fer

If the name wasn’t enough of a give away, this is a French variation of the originally Italian game, Baccarat. It’s translation ‘railroad’ doesn’t sound quite so romantic but quite fitting due to the main difference between Chemin-de-fer and traditional baccarat; namely that the French variation insists on the passing of the shoe from one player to the next when the first player has lost his hand; this ensures a railroading of the shoe around the table.

Super Pan Nine

This is a slim lined version of traditional baccarat; the decks are reduced by having the 7, 8, 9, and 10 cards removed from the decks. To compensate for the low numbers present three cards are dealt rather than two, with an option for drawing a fourth. In this version a hand of 3 or 4 only will result in the banker drawing a fourth card.

Private Baccarat

This is an unusual variation of baccarat in which the banker may choose whether to deal one or two hands to the player. Should he choose to deal the player two, the player then has the choice to play them both or to pick which one to play. If he picks one the game is as a traditional baccarat game. If however he choose to play both hands he must win both of them in order to beat the dealer; winning one and loosing one results in a tie.

Baccarat en Banque

In this French variation the player is dealt two hands, whilst the dealer is dealt one; betting on the dealers hand is prohibited in this game, and the shoe does not pass from player to player but rather stays with the dealer constantly.

Those are all the variants I know of; I’m sure that 007 could probably enlighten me as to some more, and maybe if I was lucky give me a little tutelage. For the most part it is traditional baccarat or mini-baccarat that you will find; however, it’s always good to be prepared.

If ever there was a game that conjures up visions of rich players in rich evening attire gambling for rich bets it is baccarat. There are three common variants of the game but Punto Banco is the most popular variation found in North American casinos. A regular baccarat table is about the size of a craps table, is staffed by three casino dealers and can host about a dozen players.

Play revolves around to hands dealt for the ‘Banker’ and the ‘Player’. These names are titles for the dealt hands only and there is no real banker or specific player. Players place their bets on which hand they think will win. Hand scores are calculated by taking the face value for all cards worth less than ten, one for an ace and zero for tens and face cards. The value of hand is the total of the cards value but if it comes to more than ten you drop the first digit. For example, 8-ace-jack is worth 8 plus 1 plus zero = 9. Players take it in turn to act as ‘dealer’ although this only involves turning over the cards. A player usually continues to act as dealer as long as the ‘banker’ keeps winning. The dealer starts by dealing two cards face down for the ‘banker’ and another two cards for the ‘player’. Depending on the totals the casino dealers may instruct the ‘dealer’ to deal another card. With all cards dealt winning wagers are paid out or losses collected.

A third card may be dealt to either the ‘player’ or the ‘banker’ depending on the following rules.

If either the Player or the Banker has 8 or 9 no further cards are drawn. If the Player has a total of 0-5, the Player hits a single card but stands on 6-7.If the Player did not hit, the Banker hits if he has 0-5, and stands on 6-7.If the Player drew a 2 or 3, the Banker hits if he has 0-4, and stands on 5-7.If the Player drew a 4 or 5, the Banker hits if he has 0-5, and stands on 6-7.If the Player drew a 6 or 7, the Banker hits if he has 0-6, and stands on 7.If the Player drew an 8, the Banker hits if he has 0-2, and stands on 3-7.If the Player drew an ace, 9, 10, or face-card, the Banker hits if he has 0-3, and stands on 4-7.

Essentially a game of chance, what it lacks in skill it makes up for in the size of the bets involved. In many casinos the minimum bet can start at $25 and dedicated players often wager hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a single game that gives baccarat its exotic atmosphere.

Traditional and Mini Baccarat

Baccarat is not a game that most people grow up with, but having recently been introduced to the game I must wonder why: it’s fun, fast, and exciting, here’s how it works.

In a traditional game there will be 15 seats each with a position on the table; each table is worked by three dealers, and the dealer will stand in between the 15 and 1 seat; the dealer is responsible for the running of the game even though in a traditional baccarat game he is not holding the shoe; as such he is usally referred to as the ‘caller’.

The shoe will go from player to player, and when it’s your turn to have the shoe, you must bet with the bank; if however you don’t wish to deal you can simply pass the shoe to the next player; no one will think anything of it.

When you deal the cards, you pass them to the caller who will place them correctly; having given each player their two cards he will request a further card if required or simply acknowledge the victor.

So that’s how the game works, it’s simple right? And the betting and objectives are just as straight forward to understand.

The betting occurs after the cards have been dealt and involves betting against the bank, or indeed with the bank; therefore there are three possible options for betting each of which will be represented by a place on the table in front of you in your position; they will be marked player, bank, tie. Which ever you choose, you simply place your chips on that position. Once the hand is over, the other two dealers take care of clearing the table and paying up bets.

The aim or objective of the game is the only thing still to tell you about; the idea is to get to 9. There is a twist however in that once the value of your cards gets to 10 it returns to zero, so a 6 and a 5 is in fact only worth 1 because only the amount above the 10 counts; if you don’t get to 10, for example 3 and 3, that’s fine and you have a hand of six. Face cards, in a twist to their usual prowess are worth 0 in baccarat; so a pair of kings leaves you with a hand that is quite literally worthless.

Mini baccarat as the lay mans version is usually referred has a similar ethos to traditional baccarat but with slight changes, such as the shoe not passing and there being only 6 seats at the table. Usually the minimums and maximums of a mini-baccarat table are lower and therefore somewhat more affordable than the traditional table.

I was very pleasantly surprised with how easily I took to baccarat, how fun it was and how exciting; I highly recommend giving it a whirl.

Baccarat is one of those casino games that’s incredibly easy to learn, good on the bankroll, but played by few. Why is this? Did you know that betting on the Banker in Baccarat is the best bet you could make in the casino? Probably not. Most people don’t and perhaps that’s why most people don’t play Baccarat. It’s foreign to them.

Here’s how simple Baccarat is. Each hand there’s three possible outcomes.

1. The Banker Wins.
2. The Player Wins.
3. Tie

As a player, you bet either Banker or Player. That’s it. You don’t have to know anything else to win and have fun playing Baccarat. Of course, it will be good if you understand the game more. As I mentioned earlier, betting on the Banker is the best bet in the casino. The house advantage is just 1.06% and that’s absolutely amazing.

Quick Layout Guide

The layout is pretty darn simple. You have a space for the Banker’s cards, a place for the Player’s cards, bank commission, your betting area and that’s it.

When the hand is about to start, you make a bet on either the Banker or Player and the Tie if you wish.

Payout

In Baccarat, winning bets on the Banker or the Player are paid even money, so a $10 wager is paid $10. And the ties are paid 8 to 1, so a $10 wager is paid $80.

One important note is the vig. All wins on the Banker, since that hand has a slight edge, is taxed a vig of 5%. If you win $5, you’d pay 25 cents as a vig.

Action

Keeping it simple, here’s how it goes. First, you and all other players make their wagers. You then sit back as the dealer does all the card work.

The Player and Banker hands each receive two cards. The Player is the first to act, which is why the Banker has a slight edge. If the Player is going to act, that hand is given one card. In Baccarat, each hand can have a maximum of three cards. Also, each decision is based on defined rules.

Next, the Banker takes a turn. Depending on what the Player has, the Banker will either stand or receive a card. Finally, all losing bets are collected and winning bets are paid.

Tracking the Game

If you’re playing in the real world, most tables provide tracking paper and writing instruments. Online Baccarat may have this built into the software. It’s a good idea to track hands, so you can pick up on trends.

The next best combination is to have a hand with the first two dealt cards totaling eight. This is a natural eight. A natural hand automatically wins the game unless of course there is a tie. Only a natural nine can beat a natural eight.

In case of a tie, all bets become null other than the bet on a tie. Normally, if your card total is one card less than a natural, you can take another face-up card saying ‘carte’. Otherwise, you can stand by saying ‘none’. Ideally, you should draw another card at a score of four or less than that and stand on a score of six or seven.

Winning at Baccarat

Players try to adopt many winning baccarat systems to improve their game performance. Casinos give cards and pencils to note down your game history. However, there is no truth in such game history. Cards from the shoe appear at random and therefore, you cannot predict any special outcome by looking through card history.

Card counting is not an effective strategy in the game of Baccarat. You cannot count the cards in a shoe effectively as the number of used cards put back into the shoe far exceeds the number of cards drawn from the shoe. You can have the best chances of a win in the game of Baccarat by choosing a game with as many few decks as possible. Betting on the banker is the best. How to Play French Baccarat

This is slightly different to the English and American version where players wager on either the ‘banker’ or the ‘player’, in the French game players are either the ‘banker’ or the ‘player’. The casino has no direct involvement in the game and players play amongst themselves, the casino provides the necessary equipment, and as a result take a 5% commission on all the winning hands. Understanding how to play the French version means you have the option of playing if you are actually in France or playing online at French casinos, therefore giving you more places to play.

Two hands are dealt and a player places a bet on which hand will be closest in value to 9, the choices for hands are either ‘banker’ or ‘player’. Each of the two dealt hands has a minimum of two cards and a maximum of three cards. Baccarat is played in eight rounds. The first and the third cards drawn are for the ‘player’ hand, and the second and fourth cards drawn are for the ‘banker’ hand.

Face cards and 10’s are worth zero, aces are worth one and all the other cards are valued according to their number, i.e. 2 is worth 2, 3 is worth 3… If a third card is requested, it should be drawn according to the three-card-rule described below in the table. If the points value of the first two cards drawn, regardless of the value of individual cards, is 8 or 9 it is called a ‘Naturel’ (in French), the equivalent in English is the ‘Natural’, no more cards can be requested.

The hand with the highest value, or the closest in value to 9, wins. The earnings are equivalent to the bet. If each hand is identical no-one wins, all bets are neither lost nor won.

Bankers Rules
