There are two types of online sports betting operators. Well, actually, there are more than two, but I usually count them as members of two major groups: the ones with a real life network of betting shops behind them, and the ones that operate exclusively online.
Most betting shops with exclusive online operations have started out after 2025, while members of the other group usually have much longer experience in the sports betting business, and have expanded online after quite a few years of operating in real life.
Both groups have major names in them: among the onliners we can find names like bet365, bwin and 10bet, and among those with real life operations we can mention well-known brands like Paddy Power, Betfred or the topic of today’s article: William Hill.
A short history
At the beginning William Hill operated as a clandestine betting operation. This happened back in 1934, when gambling was illegal in the UK. William, just like his betting operation, was born in Birmingham. Even before turning 18 he was already collecting illegal bets from his coworkers at a local factory. Later he tried his luck as an on-course bookmaker in Ireland, but did not have any success. Later he moved to London in 1929, where he started taking bets on greyhounds by exploiting a loophole in the applicable anti-gambling laws.
He opened an illegal gambling den in London in 1934, and worked his way up to opening his first legal betting office in 1966. From this point on his company’s growth was continuous – it has become one of the largest online gambling companies in the UK.
The company has changed hands many times in the years following William’s retirement in 1971. It was owned by various investors, even a Japanese investment bank, while not ceasing to grow in the process.
Now William Hill has over 17,000 employees, a network of over 2,400 licensed betting shops all over the UK, serving over 500,000 betting opportunities every week through its online operations.
Online sports betting
Although it offers its players a great variety of services, William Hill’s core business is still sports betting. Through its online platform it offers its players the chance to bet on a great variety of events, and not just sports. Besides football, tennis, American football, rugby, virtual sports, winter sports and basketball, it accepts bets on more special events, like TV shows (Britain’s Got Talent, The X Factor), movies (the next James Bond, for example), British Royalty, the BAFTA Awards, hell, even the weather.
Players can place their bets pre-game or in-game, through William Hill’s In-Play Betting section. After placing their bets, players don’t even have to switch on their TV – they can follow the event through William Hill’s live streaming service – WHTV – or listen to the latest developments through online radio (or listen to podcasts).
Indecisive players can find some professional help by looking for the Tip Advisor icon besides events and get professional tips from proper punters to help them make a decision. Even more tips can be found in the William Hill Tips & News section that can be found here.
Casino and other games
This is a topic that is going to take some time to fully describe, as William Hill has more sections dedicated to gaming than any other online sportsbook I have ever been to: Vegas, Games, Casino, Skill, Live Casino. Well, let’s begin, in the order they are shown at the WH website.
Vegas Casino
William Hill’s Vegas Casino is a selection of great online casino games – it’s called Vegas probably because the name William Hill Casino was already taken. Here players can find casino games – classics like roulette or blackjack, arcade games, slot machines and more, available either for browser play or on mobile.
Just a quick selection of the games available in this section: Joker Poker, Jewel of Atlantis, Vegas Slots (3 and 5 reel), Irish Eyes, Super Diamond, Fairy Fortunes, and the list could go on forever. A bunch of great games developed by Ash Gaming.
The William Hill Casino
William Hill’s online casino is another selection of great online casino games – this time ones developed by Playtech, one of the best rated providers of casino games of the industry. The WH Casino has over 200 great games to try for fun or play for real money, including casual games like Keno, Dice Twister or Jackpot Darts, scratch cards, video poker games, live casino games, table games, and lots of great slots, including Playtech’s popular Marvel Slots series (and the attached progressive jackpots, of course). The games are available for browser play or for download.
Speaking of live casino games – this section is also powered by Playtech, and is available either for playing in a browser window, or a native app for the iPhone OS and Android running mobile devices.
The WH Live Casino features exclusive tables – some for us mere mortals, and special VIP tables with personal services, a dedicated VIP manager and exclusive, private high stakes tables, along with special bonuses and opportunities. Of course, to become a VIP at the William Hill Live Casino you have to be invited…
Games
Another section with a great variety of online video slots, this time powered by WMS. Lots of games to play, lots of bonuses to cash in on, hours and hours of fun and – possibly – a lot of cash to win.
Skill games
A collection of more special online casino games, and not just that. This section features rarer card games like Brag, Briscola and Scopa, dice and table games like Dominoes, Backgammon or Poker Dice, classic casino games like roulette or blackjack, some slots and hi-lo guess games, and a game I haven’t met yet in other casinos: Heads Up Blackjack, where two players play from the same shoe, one against another, and the one with the biggest pile of chips at the end of the game wins.
Mobile versions
At William Hill all sections have their respective mobile versions, except for skill games. Mobile players can place sports bets – even in a rather random format through Shake a Bet (click here for details – you will find it interesting) -, play classic and live mobile casino games, bingo and “Games”, place bets on virtual sports, bet on the financial market or go to William Hill Vegas for a spin. Some are available as iOS apps only, others are also available as Android apps.
Wrapping it up
William Hill is not just one of the largest retail sports betting operators of the UK, but also runs a veritable online gaming and gambling hub that offers something to every player out there. The William Hill website is available in 24 languages, mostly European and Asian – it does not accept players from the US since the infamous act that has banned online gambling back in 2025.
William Hill is a huge company, a reliable operator and a provider of endless hours of fun and gaming.
